Moving house is a massive undertaking in itself, even if you’re just moving down the street. Moving to another country entirely is a much bigger deal, especially if you want to buy a property even before your plane lands.
Some people decide to rent a property in their country of choice for a while first, and then buy a house when they’re a little more established. This can make it easier to view the property you’re interested in and hopefully, give you some breathing room.
Here are some other tips to hopefully make your international move easier.
Choosing a Place to Go
The first step is, unsurprisingly, to choose where you’re going to move to. This often depends on why you want to move to another country, as this could be the easiest decision to make.
If your objective is to move to be with someone who already lives in that country or to start working in a job you already have, the decision is made for you. If you already have contacts you can trust in the other country, such as family or another loved one, it will also make the whole moving process much easier.
But what if things aren’t so cut and dry? Sometimes you might want to move to a specific country but without a set reason, in which case, you still need to work out where you’re going to move to in that country.
Look at the things you need and where you’ll be happier, as well as your budget. The cost of living can vary wildly in different countries, so you might be able to live comfortably in one country or even an area in that country, and then struggle to make do in another country.
Or what if you don’t even have a country in mind? You might just want to get away from home or, more optimistically, try something new. Parents might want to move somewhere that has a better educational system or simply to give their children an experience in another country so they can learn another language and culture.
In this case, look at all systems, local laws, the healthcare system, and what jobs are on offer. Create a shortlist of countries that suit your needs. Moving internationally shouldn’t be an impulse decision, so choose your new home wisely.
Making Sure Everything is Legal
One of the biggest complications of moving internationally is the local laws in the area, including immigration laws. You can’t just pop up in another country and hope for the best.
Do your research and make sure you have all of the necessary immigration documents. This applies whether you’re moving for work or to get married. It can be easier to move to another country if you prove you have things lined up before you go.
You should also look into local real estate agents and property lawyers who, ideally, specialize in international buyers. Sometimes you can buy a property and stay for months at a time without immigrating permanently, and then apply for a permanent residence VISA while you’re there.
Before the Move
So, you’ve got a house to rent or buy and everything is going ahead. What next? Just like any other move, you need to do a lot of preparation at home.
Try to get all the help you can and pack in advance. Your kids can help with packing if they’re old enough, as this gets them involved in the move and reduces the amount of work you have to do.
It can be helpful to use storage containers to keep your belongings safe on longer journeys. This way, you can pack and store your items before the moving day itself.
If you haven’t sold your home, consider renting it and using a property management company to earn a passive income until you’re able to sell it. In either case, you might need to renovate or at least clean up the house once your stuff is out.
Hiring International Movers
If you thought moving was bad at home, international moving is a different beast entirely. But there are ways to make it easier, like using an international moving company to ship your belongings from one country to another.
When moving your items across borders, bear in mind that they will be checked. So make sure that you don’t accidentally transport things that aren’t legal in the new country you’re moving to, otherwise you might end up losing them for good.
