The Importance Of Living Your Faith, Not Just Preaching It

As a person of faith, it’s easy to find yourself torn between your beliefs and the demands of the real world. It’s not always easy to choose the right path, but it is important. As such, making sure that you’re living by the words of your faith, and not simply repeating them, is something that takes conscious effort. Here, we’re going to look at how you can make that effort in your daily life.

Start WIth Your Family

Although we have to love our neighbors, including the ones we don’t always see eye to eye with, your impact on your community should start with the home. Children learn far more from what they can see rather than what they’re told, so introducing them to religion is just as much about showing compassion, practicing forgiveness, and modelling the behaviors that you want them to emulate. By fostering those who are more inclined to follow behaviors that bring them closer to Christ-like behavior, you can make sure that your values are being better represented in the world.

Express Faith By Serving Your Community

While faith is deeply personal, it should not be isolated. It should be shown in the way that you care for and help those in your community. By finding opportunities to volunteer, to support those in need, or simply to contribute your time or resources when the chance arises, you can live out your beliefs and demonstrate Christian love in action, not just inwardly. Scheduling time to volunteer or help out tangibly is a great start, but simply showing up when someone is struggling when you’re able can give your faith practical meaning, making it all the stronger.

Stand Up For Your Convictions

While helping others and showing love should be the primary means by which your faith interacts with the world, there are times when it’s just as important to take a stand, even when it’s not the most comfortable. For some, this can mean participating in causes like pro life organizations or other belief-based moral convictions. It doesn’t have to involve shouting or hostility, but it can mean showing support and solidarity with others who stand by those principles.

Acknowledge And Reflect When You Fall Short

One of the greatest weaknesses of those who are dedicated to faith is self-righteousness. It can often be used, even unconsciously, to justify anger, pride, spite, or a general lack of empathy for other people. This goes against the teachings of love that you’ll find in the New Testament. As such, it’s just as important to recognize your shortcomings and to always seek growth, approaching faith from a place of humility. Reflection, repentance, and a desire to do better is how you show yourself that faith isn’t just a performance, it’s a journey towards a better way of being.

Perfection is not the aim. We were all made with our foibles, after all. But taking each step on the path to living closer to the word of God is a worthwhile journey, and we become all the better for it.
