Everyone feels down in the dumps now and then, and this can happen for several reasons (and maybe multiple reasons at once). You might simply need a break from the pressure at work, or it could be that you’re facing the stressors of being a parent or have recently had a big argument with your spouse.
Whatever the cause, the number one thing you mustn’t do is dwell on it. It’s easy to just lie wallowing in bed or glued apathetically to the TV, hoping a tub of ice cream will make you feel better, but that’s rarely the case. Although you might feel you don’t want to go to the effort, it’s always better to do something.
Of course, what that something is can be difficult to nail down, so here are three evening activities for when you’re feeling low that are sure to cheer you up!

1. Take an Evening Walk or Bike Ride in Nature
While you might not feel like it, exercise can have a drastic impact on your mood. It floods your body with endorphins that make you feel good, which is otherwise known as the runner’s high. You don’t have to be running to feel it, however. A brisk walk or a bike ride can have an equally powerful effect.
Pairing outdoor exercise with nature can make for a particularly potent mixture. If you have a wooded area near your home (or some cliffs, a beach, a park – anything), see if you can catch the sunset. You’re guaranteed to feel calmer and more like yourself when you return home.
2. Catch a Comedy Show
You’ve likely seen plenty of comedy on TV, but chances are, you’ve never seen a live show.
Seeing a comedy show on the box is one thing, but attending is another entirely: each hilarious moment is felt in your chest as you interact with the crowd, and you’ll generally find the whole thing far funnier if you’re actually there.
A fun comedy night can completely turn your mood around and kickstart a happier, more positive way of thinking. Have a look at what’s available in your area, or consider making a trip of it and heading to a popular comedy club in a city of your choosing.
3. Cook a Hearty, Healthy Meal
It’s only natural to reach for junk food when you’re feeling down, but the reality is that this will make you feel worse. Refined carbohydrates and saturated fats mess with your metabolism, causing you to feel sluggish and retreat inwards rather than helping facilitate the more positive frame of mind you need right now.
Instead, cook yourself a nice meal. It can be anything you like and just for you. Go all out with the sides, too – give yourself the real restaurant experience, and make sure it’s healthy and hearty to ensure your body has what it needs to flourish. You are what you eat, as they say.
Wrapping Up
Hopefully, you now feel a little more confident in your ability to get over this hump. It might take a few days, a week, or even longer, but the choices you make now will have a big impact on your mental state going forward. You’ve got this!
