3 Topics to Encourage Your Teenager to Read for Pleasure

Raising well-rounded adults is one of the primary goals of parenting. Yet with so much emphasis placed on academic achievement and professional success, it is easy to overlook the importance of reading for pleasure. And while learning about things like freight shipping unloading and federal crimes is very important, reading for pleasure helps develop a child’s vocabulary, critical thinking skills, creativity, and imagination. It can also provide them with an escape from the day-to-day stressors of life. Unfortunately, teenagers are not always avid readers by nature and it can be difficult to motivate them to crack open a book after school or on the weekend. But that’s nothing the right reading material won’t solve!

Here are three topics that will likely get your teenager interested in leisurely reading.

Science Fiction and Fantasy

Teenagers are easily bored, but a good science fiction or fantasy book can keep them engaged as science fiction and fantasy books often involve complex worlds with unique creatures and characters that provide an escape from reality, and inspire them to use their imagination.

From classic epic stories like The Lord of the Rings to modern, action-packed novels like Ender’s Game, there’s something for everyone in this genre.

Think about it this way: the more your teen reads, the broader their horizons become. Reading science fiction and fantasy encourages teens to step outside of their comfort zone, think creatively, and look at topics from different perspectives.

History

History books can give your teenager an interesting and engaging way to learn about the world. History books often paint vivid pictures of days gone by, making them fun and exciting reads that help teenagers gain a better understanding of the context in which events took place and understand why certain things happened the way they did.

From ancient civilizations to modern wars, there are history books on almost every topic.

Reading historical books outside of the obligatory classroom setting is a perfect way to get your teenager to have an appreciation for different cultures, inspire a thirst for knowledge and understanding, and instill in them a sense of respect for those who lived before them.

Famous Autobiographies

Some people have led fascinating lives, and their autobiographies are a source of inspiration for everyone. Famous autobiographies can offer teens a unique perspective on the world and show them how perseverance, dedication, and hard work can pay off in the end.

For example, the autobiography of Malala Yousafzai, I am Malala, is a great read for teenagers who want to learn about a courageous and inspiring woman who has fought for education rights in her country despite incredible odds.

Encouraging your teenager to read doesn’t have to be a chore. By introducing them to topics that anyone can find interesting, you can help foster a love of reading in your teen. From science fiction and fantasy to famous autobiographies, there are books out there for every interest. So why not start exploring now? Who knows what adventures await you and your teen!
