Traveling to Greece – What to look out for

Traveling to Greece is sure to be a dream for you. For me it was for a long time and still is today. Living in the country was one of the best experiences that life has brought me, and that is why I would like to use this article to talk about certain issues that are often not considered before going on your Greece tour.

Is Greece a safe country? Do I need insurance to travel to Greece?

The answer, as is often the case, depends on many factors. So let’s go over it little by little.

Current situation – Security in Greece

As the country is in Europe, it is common to think that there are no dangers, that it is safe to travel to Greece and that it is like being at home. But the fact that nothing can happen is not so certain? And if you are not a resident of the European Union, you should definitely be careful.

Greece is full of islands, bigger or smaller. The most populated or touristy are better prepared. But forget about finding hospitals on small islands. It sounds like a bad omen, but you come out happy in the morning, you slip, you injure your leg and then you need to need medical attention.

Leaving the islands is linked to the frequency of the boats, which is not always daily. In addition to all the above, what plays against you is the fact that probably when you arrive in Greece you will not know how to read, write or speak the language. Beyond mishaps, accidents there are also theft or unpredictable health problems.

Is Greece dangerous? Is it safe to travel to Greece?

Generally speaking, Greece is not a dangerous country. In fact, I lived there and I think I can speak properly. I consider Greece to be a very safe country to travel to. It’s true that I lived in a small town, but in general terms; it is not that Greece is a country where you can travel with dangers lurking around you.

Greeks are extremely kind and friendly. If you speak a little Greek to them, you will have solved a good part of your problems. In any case, as in any capital, Athens should not be trusted. You know what happens in big cities: thugs, pickpockets, and street scams. If something like that does happen to you don’t hesitate to immediately look for lawyers online who will be more than happy to help you out.

Within Greece you also have to be careful on the roads. Greeks are not known for driving particularly slowly. Double overtaking and dangerous corners are common, so pay attention.

Finally, do not underestimate the vicissitudes of the sea – even if it is the peaceful Mediterranean Sea – nor of cruise ships. Boats, sailboats and crossings are all things to keep an eye out for while in the water.

Is it mandatory to have travel insurance to Greece?

No, obviously not. You are free to decide if you want to go with travel insurance to Greece. But it is recommended because of everything that was mentioned earlier. If there is a medical problem, a road accident, a robbery, a frustrated trip … Travel insurance is there for all those things. Of course the final decision is yours.

All in all Greece is a safe destination to visit and spend some days in but like with most destinations you need to keep an eye out and steer clear of trouble to make the best of your trip.
