Winter Tips: How To Keep Your Heating System Safe

Winter is a gloomy time for many of us. It becomes more of a struggle to rise out of bed in the mornings and it seems increasingly difficult to maintain the heat in your home without having to pump up the heat in your radiators. When the temperatures begin to plummet, there can be dangerous consequences for your heating system. Some can be so serious that they could cause a system failure, resulting in the heat you’re so used to being eliminated completely.

To help keep your heating system safe throughout the winter months, here are a few tips to get you started, and to ensure that you’re never left without warmth.

Keep your system up to date.

If you know you’ve had your boiler for many years, it might be the time to think about upgrading to a more efficient model. An old heating system plus cold weather is the perfect recipe for a breakdown. Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Ideal boilers, to name a few, have a range of energy efficient models to see you through the winter, perfect for a range of different home set ups. A more reliable system in your home makes the chance of a breakdown more unlikely.

Look after your radiators.

Like anything, if your radiators start making unfamiliar noises, then something isn’t right. A lot of the time, all it takes is a little work. If the noises persist or your radiators aren’t getting as hot as they should, then try bleeding them to get rid of any trapped air. When done correctly, you will notice your radiators will get warmer to the touch, heating up your home more efficiently, without the need for the unnecessary noise!

Insulation your pipes.

It’s common knowledge that insulating your homes via the loft and walls will help to keep your home warmer for longer. But what about the risk of frozen boiler pipes when the freezing temperatures arrive? By ensuring your boiler pipes are completely insulated in advance, you’ll minimise any risk of frozen pipes. If your pipes do freeze, then this can cause a boiler breakdown; not something you need at the coldest time of the year.

Get a boiler service.

A boiler service by a registered Gas Safe Engineer is recommended annually. This is to make sure that everything is running like clockwork and to identify any problems that could cause your system to breakdown. Sometimes, a boiler service is required to keep the warranty valid, so it is worth doing to be on the safe side

Keep furniture and clothes away from radiators.

Anything that can prevent the heat from your radiators circulating the room will force your boiler to work twice as hard. Furniture can take in the heat from your radiators and drying clothes on them can prevent the heat from escaping, forcing your boiler to work twice as hard to reach the desired temperature. Making sure your radiators have space around them to allow the warm air to circulate will help to prevent any further problems later down the line.

Turn down your thermostat.

You may have heard stories about how reducing your thermostat by as little as one degree can help to save you energy and money – it’s true! Even the smallest decrease in temperature can help you to become more energy efficient and also enable you to see a nice decrease in the price of your energy bills each month too. By turning down your thermostat by 1 degree, you could save around £75 per year.

Prolong the life of your heating system by keeping these factors in mind.

By taking into account some of the points above, you’ll not only keep your heating system safe and ensure that works as efficiently as possible, but you’ll also be saving money each month in the process. How do you ensure you keep your heating system safe? Let us know in the comments!
