3 Tips to DIY kitchen sink unclogging

A clogged kitchen sink can limit a lot of cleaning activities in your kitchen and sometimes lead to bad odors. If not fixed on time water will keep accumulating and rising and harbor dirt and bacteria. To remove the dirt you need to find ways of unclogging the sink. However, this does not need the intervention of a plumber which might be expensive.

It is possible to unclog the sink without hiring a plumber or using harsh chemicals. You can use simple DIY tips and tricks using basic kitchen tools and ingredients. Use these 3 DIY tips to unclog your sink and save some money.

Baking soda mixtures

There are different baking soda mixtures that will do the trick. The first includes a combination of vinegar and baking soda. When using this mixture, you need to remove standing water first. Then pour about a cup of baking soda into the drain. This should be followed by the same amount of white or apple cider vinegar which will result in bubbling/ fizzing.

Once the bubbling stops put the stopper and wait about 15 minutes or if possible the entire night. The bubbling helps remove any accumulated hair or gunk in the pipe. After that pour in some hot water to see if the clog clears away. Repeat in case the clog is still intact.

The second is the baking soda and salt mixture where you mix a cup of baking soda with a half-cup of salt. Pour it down the drain and leave it for several hours. Afterward, flush with boiling water. Both processes can be repeated several times in case the first doesn’t work.

Use a plunger

The household plunger can be a great tool when it comes to unclogging sinks. When using a plunger to unclog a double sink, you first need to seal off the other side using a piece of cloth or stopper. This ensures that the plunger can suck up the dirt clogging the sink. Place the plunger and plunge severally with all your strength. Once you hear that the suction is complete, flush the drain with warm or hot water.

Boiled water options

Boiled water is quite effective when it comes to unclogging sinks. Boil enough water until it’s hot enough and then pour it into the clogged drain. But first, you need to ensure that the sink does not have any water to prevent it from cooling the boiled water.

In case there is any water in the sink, remove the water first before pouring the boiled water. This can be repeated several times to ensure that all the dirt is removed. Alternatively, you can mix boiling water and salt. The salt helps to fasten the process of unclogging the drain.
