Old school hacks for a better Childhood

As grown-ups, we often have happy memories of our childhoods. Going to the park with friends, having birthday parties in fast-food restaurants, and getting grubby outdoors. But as modern life has progressed and times have changed, what it means to have a childhood has altered beyond recognition. For many parents, that’s a real shame.

The good news is that you can still help create some of the magic of your childhood with a bit of ingenuity, as well as make your job as a parent easier. Here are some ideas you’ve just got to try.

Make Play Time Simple

For many people, wooden toys were a mainstay growing up. They were simple, hard to break and a lot of fun. In many ways, they were an improvement over the intricate, battery-operated toys of today. As any parent will tell you, all of that cost and complexity means very little to a child. What they want is something that sparks their imagination and that they can share with their friends. That’s why it’s often the simplest of objects that create the most fascination. After all, it certainly entertained many of us when we were young.

Collect Old Mobile Phones

We’re now more than three decades into the mobile phone era. And that means that over the years, many of us have collected a drawer full of old phones that we no longer use. Rather than just sticking them in the recycling, why not let your kids play with them? After all, they’re going to have to learn to use mobile phones at some point in the future. Playing with old cameras and learning how to operate the menus is not only entertaining, but also free from risk. Your brand new iPhone is safe.

Use Command Hooks Whenever You Can

Stuffing the things you need for the day-to-day chores of raising children in drawers and cupboards probably isn’t a good idea. Not only is it hard to organise, but it also slows you down.

A much better solution is to use command hooks whenever the opportunity arises. Put them on the back of high-chairs to hold bibs, or on kid’s bedroom doors for satchels. You can even use them for bags of toiletries in the bathroom.

Build A Rope-Operated Swing

A homemade swing in the garden is a cliche for sure. But rather than having to push your child, try attaching a piece of rope to the seat of the swing so you can tug them from afar.

Buy Utility Clothing

Being a child is an uncertain experience. You never quite know what life is going to throw at you next. So it’s a good idea to invest in clothing that will leave them prepared for anything.

Cargo pants might be old-school when it comes to fashion. But there’s no denying their utility. Your child can load up on food, maps, stationary – whatever they need to get through the day. And you can rest assured that they are wearing something robust that won’t wear out after a single season of use.

I appreciate your perspective on wooden toys. “All of that cost and complexity [of fast-fashion toys] means very little to a child. What they want is something that sparks their imagination and that they can share with their friends.” That’s priceless advice. Thank you!
